Frequently Asked Questions about the GHS Band and Guard.
Do I have to audition to be in the GHS Band? No, you only have to audition if you want to try to be a member of the Symphonic Band. All incoming students will be placed in our Concert Band class unless you make the Symphonic Band. However, you must have had middle school band experience to be in our high school band.
Do I have to be in the GHS Marching Band? Yes, all students involved with the Symphonic and Concert Bands are involved in the Marching Band. You do not have to sign up for a "Marching Band" class, all you have to do is sign up for band. If you come and give it a try, we guarantee that you will love it!!!!
Am I going to be able to handle Marching Band? Yes!! We help you transition to marching band and teach you everything you need to know. Also, you will have 100 other students that can help you study, do homework and help you adjust to high school life.
Am I going to be able to handle Cambridge and Band? Yes!! A majority of our band students are in the Cambridge Program or are in the Honors Program. Your best source for transitioning to high school and high school academics will be the upper classmen in the GHS Band program.
Do I have to attend the Summer Band Camps? Yes, all students are expected to attend both of our Band Camps. (dates found on our calendar page) This is when we teach you how to march, learn the show and get to know each other.
I play a double reed instrument, what do I play for Marching Band? That is your choice!! We have had double reed players do everything from march clarinet, to sax, to mellophone, to front ensemble, to drum line and guard. Contact Mr. Pirzer to see what might work out best for you.
How much does High School Band cost? We ask our students to raise a Fair Share of $525.00 per student. Now, that seems like a lot, but we break it down like this. Band Camp I $100.00, Band Camp 2 $100.00, then $75.00 per month from September to January. We offer at least one fund raiser per month to help you offset the costs of band and we also encourage you to take advantage of our patron program. Details can be found on our sponsor page. There are additional fees for instrument rentals, marching shoes and gloves.
Why should I choose the GHS Band and Guard? The GHS Band and Guard has a 70+ year tradition of musical and visual excellence. We provide all students the opportunity to receive a well rounded musical education will performing at the highest levels possible for a high school group. In recent years we have earned 3 State Marching Band Championships, Superior ratings at All FBA District Events, and we are one of only a few Florida Bands that have been invited to the Brand New National Marching Band Championships this November in St. Petersburg.
Most importantly, the GHS Band provides a safe, family atmosphere that students and parents can be actively involved in. We take pride in making sure every student can reach their musical and academic goals. Ask our students and parents, the GHS Band has been a positive influence on their lives and they carry that influence with them well after high school.
